LinkedIn Algorithm – Breakdown & Debate #2

We’re back to everyone’s favorite series, Breakdown & Debate. Cue the music ✨

Check out part 1 here where I discuss how frequency will affect the the performance of your posts.

Now, we will look at the:

Best vs. Worst Type of Posts

It was the best of times versus the worst of times …

The information below is in reference to this LinkedIn post by Sam Browne, who breaks down LinkedIn Algorithm secrets.

Best Post Types

  • Document Posts – 2.2 to 3.4x more reach
  • Polls – 2.1 to 2.9x more reach
  • Carousel Post – 1.8 to 2.3x more reach
  • Text + Multiple Pictures – 1.2 to 1.6x more reach

Worst Post Types

  • Video Posts – 0.5 to 0.8x of average reach
  • Posts with 1 External Link – 0.4 to 0.5 of average reach
  • Posts with 2+ External Link – 0.2 to 0.4x of average reach

Video Posts are over?

The time of Video is over… for LinkedIn? Video and reels are still reign supreme on platforms like Instagram and Tik Tok but LinkedIn is playing by different rules. Which, in my opinion, is how LinkedIn wants to structure and stand out compared to the others. Instagram and Tik Tok are for fun and entertainment, LinkedIn is professional so I guess it will more difficult to track foul play on LinkedIn and would not be as tolerated.

One thing to note about LinkedIn is that the platform rewards users who use all of its features and STAYS on the platform. Any users who adds external links or encouragers people to watch a video SOMEWHERE else, will be punished. So it would benefit users to upload the mp4 directly on LinkedIn rather than trying to post via a social media scheduling tool. In a previous post, I discuss tools and resources social media managers use.

All Hail Interactive Posts

Move over Video, there is a new type of post on the block. As I mentioned above, users who utilize all of LinkedIn’s features are REWARDED and using these type of posts–documents and poll–will rake in the impressions and engagements. Honestly, Carousal posts are SUPER fun. There are a creative and eye-catching way to inform people instead of a lengthy post. You can easily create carousal on Canva and upload them as a PDF on LinkedIN.

What are your thoughts on the stats above? Why do you think Video is not preforming as well on LinkedIn? Should there be a change?
